$700 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

The Dead Wood Society is pleased to announce we raised $700 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society! This is all thanks to the generosity of those who had their photo taken in the pile of tribbles, purchased a tribble, a raffle ticket or other merchandise, or made a contribution at the Tribble Bash, as well as those who purchased a tribble or made a contribution at one of our panels, or from the lady in the electric cart roving around Arisia.

We thank you and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society thanks you!

Tribble Bash a huge success!

The Tribble Bash was filled with a lively crowd all night long. People entered through the arch of the Guardian of Forever (photo below), which spoke lines from the Star Trek episode and had lights flashing within it. Everyone was greeted by “Edith Keeler” or a mini-skirted “Starfleet officer”. Many people headed straight for the Tribble Bash-O-Matic (photo above) to pummel a few tribbles, then to the Tribble Toss (photo below right) where they tried to get 3 Kirks, Koloths or tribbles in a row. Some people got caught up in the Trek Villains Scavenger Hunt/Trivia Contest. And it seemed everyone wanted their photo taken in the huge pile of tribbles! (See photos in posts below.)

On a huge screen, silent trivia questions were playing. Starfleet banners hung on the walls. Posters with Star Trek photos promoted our upcoming panels. Nomad sat on a table, blinking. The sound of tribbles purring and chattering was in the air. Two tribbles walked around on their own, stopping often to squeak. Tribbles were strewn on every surface, and when people found one they liked, they could purchase it to bring home. And there were other items for sale, all to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Past the black curtain wall hung with white lights and stars, was the lounge area. People sat in beanbag tribbles or at tables, munching occasionally on multicolored veggie chips, watching clips from the original Star Trek series edited into amusing music videos. Each time the song “Star Trekkin’” came around on the 90-minute loop, Dead Wood Society members got up on the stage for a spirited pantomime of the song.

The crowd seemed to have a great time, and we received thanks and compliments all weekend long. And thanks from us to everyone who attended!

Costume Contest Winner

Here is a photo of the winner of the Tribble Bash Costume Contest (with Nomad in the background). She was portraying Dr. Miranda Jones from the Star Trek episode, "Is There In Truth No Beauty?". Our winner modified the clothes she wore underneath to match more closely Dr. Jones' outfit, and made the "sensory net" overlay herself, attaching all the beads and studs by hand, as well as doing up her hair to match the character's hairstyle. Great job!

Everyone who entered received a lovable, furry tribble. And the winner's prize was a kit for making tribbles!

A real live Tribble!

A week or two before the Tribble Bash, we were contacted by a woman whose last name was Tribble! She said her birthday would be the weekend of Arisia, and she and a few friends had decided to celebrate it at the Tribble Bash. We were delighted. At the Tribble Bash, our MC, "Cyrano Jones", introduced Ms. Tribble to the crowd and presented her with a tribble of her own.

WOW! What a great turnout we had this year. The place was filled from opening to closing. Thank you to all that helped and thanks to Arisia for having us. We made quite a bit for our Charity. Now it's time to curl up and sleep for a few weeks.

Tribble BASH

Just finished the soundtrack to the Tribble BASH machine.

We have to forgo the mallet because it will destroy the entire machine.

So you will be whacking the tribbles with your hand. Still pleasantly violent.

"Trek Travel"
Do you build your vacations around conventions to get your Trek fix? This panel offers some interesting alternative Trek choices. Join us as we explore Trek TV and movie filming locations, the town of Vulcan, Kirk's Birthplace, graveyards, Universities and more. Come share your ideas and experiences, and bring travel questions for our well-traveled panelists. Cool giveaways and prizes!

"Whose Next Star Trek Line Is It Anyway?"
Come play our version of The Singing Bee - without the singing. We'll act out famous Star Trek scenes from the various series and films, but leave out key words or phrases which you have to fill in. A pretty girl or two will be presenting prizes, and your emcee promises to provide loads of laughs. Whether you join in or just watch the fun unfold, you could win a prize or have a tribble thrust upon you!

Classic Trek costume contest with prizes!

While we welcome people and creatures from all universes, we encourage Classic Trek costumes, including Starfleet officers, aliens, monsters, and those revealing female guest star outfits – even Klingons! There will be prizes for the best costumes from the original Star Trek series, in the following categories:

-Best Main Character
-Best Alien
-The Bill Theiss Award for Sexiest Costume
-Most Humorous
-The Transporter Accident Award for Worst Costume
-Best Workmanship

Judging (by two award-winning costumers!) will take place at 11PM.

Our charity is The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

We wanted a charity that had some direct connection to our group. This year one of our members was diagnosed with leukemia. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (http://www.leukemia-lymphoma.org) has the highest rating on Charity Navigator for leukemia-related organizations, so we chose them.

Their mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Your donations at the Tribble Bash will help fund blood cancer research, pay for prescriptions for leukemia patients that can't afford them, pay for counseling for patients facing the diagnosis of blood cancer, and more.

At the Tribble Bash, you can have your picture taken in a mound of tribbles for $3 and receive your photo on the spot! And we will have some items on sale. The entire proceeds will go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

Nothing says Christmas like a Guardian of Forever...

You will enter the Tribble Bash through the Guardian of Forever. The Guardian is from one of the most famous episodes of classic Star Trek, City on the Edge of Forever, where the Captain must allow his latest love to die to allow the time stream to correct itself, allowing Kirk and his crew to return to the future they had known. The story was penned by the infamous Harlan Ellison. Did you know: The original GoF was made of Plexiglas and plaster. The dark cracks in the circumference was to hide the seam lines of the Plexiglas. Our GoF is 98% air and 2% nylon and stands 9 feet tall.

A celebration of where it all began...
- Classic Trek -
The Dead Wood Society (All former members of the Boston Star Trek Association ) is hosting a party at Arisia on Friday night called the Tribble Bash, featuring games/activities (one involving a mallet!), videos, music, costumes, and giveaways. A photo opportunity will be available for a small fee, with all the proceeds going to charity.

Classic Trek costumes are encouraged, including Starfleet officers, aliens, monsters, and those revealing female guest star outfits. We welcome Klingons, but we can't promise the Tribbles will!

On Saturday, Sunday and Monday, the Dead Wood Society will put on a mini-track of lively Trek panels full of news, rumors, Trek Remastered, the new Star Trek movie, and chances to interact with classic Trek scenes!
